A stone crab is a subset species of a crab that lives in the ocean, crawling along the ocean floor where they forage for food. The stone crab is about 5 to 6.5 inches wide, brownish red with grays spots and a tan underside with large claws that have black tips. They can be found in the western North Atlantic, from Belize to Cuba to the Gulf of Mexico. These crabs are a delicacy because of their huge claws, which are not only abnormally large but are powerful enough to break an oyster shell. The crab itself does not contain a lot of meat, but its claws have made it more popular because the meat is so tender and juicy when cooked.

Someone thought it’d be a good idea to serve them, and threw them in a pot of boiling water. That was the start of the stone crab phenomenon, and now you can get them served with all different types of sides ranging from cole slaw to hash browns.
