Tarpon Fishing the Right Way

Tips, Tricks and Techniques for Catching Big Ones

Fishing is an art. It takes time and a lot of patience to be able to sit out in the water on a boat for hours at a time trying to catch fish. Most fishers don’t do this for food purposes, but just for the simple joy of getting that prize we’ve waited so long to obtain.

Tarpon fishing can be a challenge, but with the right tools and techniques, even a beginner can get lucky. The tarpon is a large fish of the genus Megalops, native to the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific oceans. It can grow up to 4-8 feet long and weigh 60-280 lbs. It is very strong and is known for being aggressive when hooked on a fishing pole.

There are a few things you have to know when trying to catch a tarpon. First, make sure you size your tackle correctly. You don’t want a tackle that wears out both the fisherman and the fish otherwise it won’t be much of a fight. Next, buy strong, quality hooks that are able to hold the tarpon on the rod. Tarpons have bony mouths and because of this, if you don’t get the right size hook, then all of that work will have been for nothing. And third, if you are going to use live bait, crab and pinfish are the best options. Of course, you don’t know what the tarpon will prefer, which is why it is best to have both.

It’s always good to remember to be safe, and if you can, have an experienced fishing guide with you in case anything goes wrong. Fishing is a skill that can be taught and having good techniques can help. For all the fish lovers out there looking to make a great catch, follow these tips and you could certainly catch a tarpon.
