Shelter Island:

A Perfect Getaway from City in Minutes

Looking to escape the city and don’t want to go to the hoity-toity Hamptons? Then Shelter Island is the place for you, and it is closer than you think. Tucked away between the north and south forks of Long Island, Shelter Island is a small community with about 2,300 residents. You can access the island by ferry from the north through Greenport or from the south at Sag Harbor.

Known for its natural beauty, it is the perfect getaway for bird-watching, hiking, and best of all, some of the most spectacular kayaking. The north side of the island is the historic section, with old Victorian homes while the southern side holds some of the most quaint and lovely places to stay.

The island is only about 27 square miles, so it is easy to get around and see all that you want to, even on a short vacation. Whether you want to spend your time kayaking around Shelter Island Sound or take the family mini golfing over at Whale’s Tale, you will want to pick a great place to stay. Here are some of the top options for you:

The Shelter Island House is the perfect romantic getaway, maintaining the feel of the 1800’s with a modern, sophisticated décor. The in house restaurant, bar, and tavern can serve all your food and beverage needs, plus a complimentary continental breakfast. There is a pool on site, as well as bicycles available to take out for a ride around the island.

The Pridwin Hotel is a Gatsby-era style resort, complete with all the amenities. Whether you want to go for a swim, sunbath on the private beach, or grab a game of tennis, the Pridwin has it all. It is perfect for families and has a restaurant, bar and lounge on site. Want to take a paddle boat around the Sound? They have those too, with two docks for great sunfishing. The Pridwin has all the charm that Shelter Island prides itself on and so much more.

The Ram’s Head Inn, built in 1929, is off the beaten path but on such a small island it is perfectly situated. The back lawn is strewn with Adirondack chairs, begging to be sat in, leading down to the small but adequate private beach. Paddle boats and kayaks are available to guests, and there is a tennis court and basketball court, great for the kids to stay entertained. There is a fine dinging restaurant and a bar, all opening onto a beautiful terrace overlooking the lawn down to the water. A gorgeous place to stay!

So the next time you are tired of the city and feeling overwrought from all the hustle and bustle, take a ride out to Shelter Island for a break. Enjoy fine cuisine at any of the inns and hotels, and kick back for a vacation that is sure to recharge your battery.
