On the Chesapeake Bay
Clams, Oysters, Blue Crabs and More…
While we are still months away from July (which is the peak crab-picking season), there is no reason why you cannot satisfy your crab-cravings right away. You can catch your own crabs or buy freshly-steamed ones from the local market. But why bother when you can order them in the dozens at a crab house? And where better to stuff on crabs than Chesapeake Bay? If you happen to be in the area, here is a list of some amazing crab shacks you can head to!
Fisherman’s Inn & Crab Deck
This is a third-generation family Island serving customers around Prospect Bay for almost 90 years now. If you happen to be there, do order their steamed crabs. Also check out the Nauti Mermaid Bar, which is a newly renovated watering hole at Fisherman’s.
The Masthead
If you love the sunset, the Masthead at Pier Street Marina is the place to be. You will enjoy splendid water views in the evening. Enjoy your crab with a plate of pickles and cheese. The Masthead is quite a popular spot, but it also has a spacious deck so it isn’t too crowded.
The Crab Claw
Chesapeake Bay crabs are not only delicacies but also tourist attractions. And for most of these tourists, the Crab Claw is the hub. It is centrally located just alongside Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. While you enjoy steam crabs, crab balls, and crisp-edge crabcakes, also take a slice of Smith Island Cake. You can take a waterside table, or even dine on the second floor to get a great view of the harbor.
Canntler’s
Finally, you simply cannot leave Chesapeake Bay without tasting the corn on the cob at Jimmy Cantler’s Riverside Inn. The wait is long, so it is better to pull up in a boat instead of waiting in the parking area
So, if you like to break hard-shells on a mallet on your dining table, Chesapeake Bay crab houses await you.
