Casco Bay, Maine

Chebeague Island

There is no place more peaceful or serene than the islands of Casco Bay
Maine. Referred to as the “Calendar Islands” in the 1700’s by English engineer Wolfgang William Romer, who felt there were as many islands as there were days of the year. The largest island in the bay not connected by a bridge is Chebeague Island which translates from Native American to “Island of Many Springs”.

One of many great achievements of this small maritime community is it recently became its own town, seceding from Cumberland. Chebeague comprises 17 islands surrounding the larger island, of which only 2 are inhabited by the citizens of the new town. Steeped in thousands of years of history going back to
the Wabanaki Confederacy
and the Native Americans who would spend summers fishing and collecting food for the winters. Lobster was so plentiful in those days, they used them to fertilize the fields!

There are several quaint restaurants on the island such as The Low Bell Cafe and Niblic. The Chebeague Inn is a gorgeous spot with it’s own restaurant and 21 guest rooms all uniquely decorated with Maine artist’s work. On chilly evenings, have a seat in the Great Room .

Sailing, fishing and farming are the heart of Chebeague Island and the community. Residents were hesitant to dive into the tourism craze, but they have managed to find a balance with tourists and island life that works in perfect harmony. Chebeague Island is an ideal getaway from the hubbub of the city life and daily grind.
