Food and fuel for surfers

Surfing is a demanding sport for our bodies and like any sport that expends a lot of energy, proper nutrition before during and after is key. Although surfing is considered a laid-back kind of sport, make no mistake, it is an intense workout. Paddling your board through the water is a whole-body workout, while surfing requires your legs and core to be physically strong. Like any, athlete, the proper fuel will go a long way.

What to eat while surfing?
Whether you are an advanced surfer or are simply learning for the first time, having a solid meal plan while you are out surfing can make all the difference. A good meal includes having a balanced mix of carbs, fats and protein. Carbs are necessary as your swim and paddle through the water and can be obtained through whole grain breads, fruits and vegetables.

Surfers will want to avoid sugary snacks such as candy or sugary drinks as they can cause and spike in insulin and make you feel tired and fatigued. Instead, consume healthy carbs and add healthy fats such as nuts and avocados.

Protein is also very important as to maintain and repair over-worked muscles. Healthy sources include lean meats, seafood, beans and nuts. Milk is also a great source of all three macronutrients and is sometimes used with protein powder for a quick protein shake.

Sport experts recommend consuming a balanced meal at least three hours before physical activity to allow your body to absorb and start converting nutrients to energy.

Only you will know what works best for you and which types of foods to avoid that may make you feel tired or sluggish.

Overall, it is best to consume a balanced, healthy meal before you hit the water with your board and plan on consuming healthy food throughout the day to keep your energy levels high. Proper hydration is also key as the sun and heat can take a toll on your hydration levels.
