Shrimp Tempura Recipe

Did you know that you can actually make your own shrimp tempura at home? Follow these simple tips, and you can make delicious tempura anytime at the comfort of your own home.

First, you will need to prepare the following ingredients:

  • Shrimps or prawns
  • Vegetable or canola oil
  • Corn starch or potato starch
  • 3 eggs
  • 200 mL water
  • All purpose flour
  • Salt
  • Corn flour
  • Paper towels
  • 1 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chopped ginger
  • 1 tablespoon spicy chili sauce
  • 1/4 cup Japanese rice wine
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves

First, you will need to make the batter.

  1. Crack open the eggs, and separate the yolks from the whites. Set aside 1 yolk and 2 egg whites.
  2. Beat the egg yolk and whites lightly.
  3. Take a bowl and whisk together 1 cup of each of water and all purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of corn flour, and 1 pinch of salt.
  4. Add egg yolks to the bowl, and stir until bumpy and moist. Add the egg whites. Set aside.

To create the special tempura sauce, you only need to mix soy sauce, sake, hot sauce, fresh ginger and cilantro leaves together in a bowl. Allow the mixture to marinate for taste.

With the batter and sauce finished, it’s time to cook the tempura. Here are the steps you should follow:

  1. Peel shrimp or prawn, but leave the tail intact.
  2. Put some paper towels into dishes.
  3. Take a deep-frying pan, and pour about 3 centimeters of oil.
  4. Turn the heat up until the temperature reaches 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  5. sing tongs or chopsticks, grasp the tail of the shrimps or prawn and dip one at a time into the batter. The tail does not need to be battered.
  6. Put each shrimp into the frying pan.
  7. Be careful not to put all of the shrimps at one time into the frying pan. Leave at least 50% of space to avoid cooling down the oil.
  8. Fry for at most 2 minutes. Extract each shrimp and place on plates with paper towel to drain excess oil.
  9. Repeat until all shrimps have been cooked.
  10. Wait until shrimps cool down and serve with special tempura sauce.
