A Quick and Healthy Dinner
Want to learn how to bake fish? Here’s a simple way to bake fish to heavenly tenderness without requiring much preparation or effort.
This technique works well for all kinds of fish, whether you’re preparing flounder, haddock, or the firm-fleshed white fish.
Let’s start. If you’re using frozen fish, cover it and thaw it in the refrigerator. Once thawed, it’s time to preheat your oven. Make sure your kitchen is well-ventilated.
If you’re using dressed fish, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. And if you’re making fillets or steaks, preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
When preparing fillets with skin, you can go both ways; either remove the skin from the raw fish using a sharp fillet knife or first bake the fish and then get rid of the skin.
Next, rinse the fish and pat them dry with a towel. Grease a shallow baking pan, and place the fish in the pan in a single layer. With fillets, you want to tuck under any thin edges.
To keep the fish moist, you can brush it with olive oil or melted butter. For seasoning, you can work with salt and pepper, and also use, if desired, minced garlic, fresh or dried herbs.
When baking fish, remember that fish cooks quickly and becomes dry if you overcook it. When it comes to cooking time, the rule of thumb is 6 to 9 minutes for 8 oz. of dressed fish, and 8 to 12 minutes per inch of fillets or steak.
To see if the fish is baked, always check at the minimum baking time. A simple way to test for doneness is to place a fork in the fish and gently twist it. If it is baked properly, you’ll see white juice in the fish That’s about it!
