The Best Blue Crab Cakes on the East Coast
by L.A. DiNardi
Who doesn’t love a delicious, savory blue crab cake? I can tell you that to any native of Maryland, crab cakes, or blue crabs in general are practically a religion. Like cheese is to Wisconsin, those little ocean crustaceans are serious business to Marylanders. So where else would we go to find the best blue crab cake?
Surprisingly, West Ocean City, Maryland situated rigt on the Isale of Wight Bay is where we found it. A place called The Shark on the Harbor, or just simply “The Shark.”
Blue crabs can also be found in Rhode Island; however the traditional and truly delectable crab cake recipes are on the coast of Maryland. The Shark is dedicated to providing the freshest ingredients, prepared from scratch and using local products only. Supporting the local fishing and farming industry, they buy delectable blue crabs directly from the boats in the harbor and organic produce from local farms.
These crab cakes have very little filler and served with a lemon dill aioli. Cooked to perfection, using only organic and fresh ingredients, there is no better crab cake on the East Coast. Keeping it simple, without overcomplicating the recipe with too many ingredients or seasoning, The Shark’s lump crab cakes are really a bite of heaven. Customers swear when they have these tasty cakes for the first time, it is the best thing on earth. With reviews like that, who are we to argue? The Shark is owned by Travis and Jody Wright, a husband and wife team who founded this locally sourced restaurant before it was all the rage to tout “organic” and “local”
food on the menu, like so many do now.
The Shark is situated right on the harbor, complete with beautiful views of the Isle of Wight Bay and lush Maryland landscape. The prices are just a touch above average, however it is a small price to pay when you know your money is going to support local businesses, farms, and fisherman. Whether you are passing through or looking for a great vacation destination, make sure you make a stop in West Ocean City and have a crab cake at The Shark on the Harbor.
