Keep Our Waters Clean

What is a Macerator?

It Keeps the Ocean Clean

Maceration is the process of reducing solids into small pieces so it can be easily pumped to another location. A maceration pump is usually used to grind/blend human waste into a slurry so it can be moved easily. This is also done on boats, where the macerator sucks solids and liquids from holding tank lines and grinds the waste for simple discharging.

So basically a macerator helps keep our ocean clean. The word macerator refers to the pump’s action of grinding the waste as it enters the pump’s inlet. The majority of macerator pumps are self-priming. This means the macerator will raise the liquid and solid waste to the inlet and further lift the waste overboard.

Macerator also helps avoid clogged lines. Moreover, it reduces the amount of water needed to flush the toilet. You’ll need to install the pump on the toilet’s input side for this. You can see how important the function of a macerator is, especially on a boat. You don’t want to be the person who pollutes the ocean while enjoying cruising on it – and a macerator will help you not become that person.

Installing a macerator pump is quite straightforward. So there’s no compelling reason why you shouldn’t have this on your boat. More importantly, it’s the law. Federal law requires all boats in US waters that have permanent toilets to have a Marine Sanitation Device (MSD) on board.

The MSD should either hold the human waste so till it’s transferred ashore, or reduce the coliform count to low levels that the discharge is no longer a public hazard. A macerator will help you fulfill this requirement. If you own a boat that has a toilet, you should get a macerator if you don’t already have one. The macerator can also be used in homes. It’s function on land will also help you avoid polluting the ocean.
