Quaint, Coastal History
Marblehead, first named Massabequash, was settled in 1629 by Joseph Doliber. Uniquely situated on a peninsula in the Cape Ann section of eastern Massachusetts, it is a picturesque town calling up images of traditional New England from days long ago. Rich in history, architecture and seafood, Marblehead is a must see place on your visit to New England.
The original residents thought the cliffs were made of marble, instead of the granite that actually makes up the rocky beaches, which is how Marblehead got its name. With a well established community by the time the Revolutionary War began, sailors from this historic town are credited with being the forerunners of the Navy.
With nautical backgrounds, soldiers under the command of John Glover helped the Continental Army escape the Battle of Long Island. These same sailors turned soldiers ferried George Washington across the Delaware River for his attack on Trenton. The first naval ship commissioned, the Hannah, was run by a crew from Marblehead. Fishing was a major commerce through the 1800’s which led to sailing for pleasure. Because Marblehead is surrounded by water on three sides, and has an incredible harbor, it naturally became a haven for yachting. Home to half a dozen yacht clubs, including the oldest junior yacht club in America, the Pleon Yacht Club, this coastal town is a magnet for seafarers.
While touring the town, check out another historical site called Marblehead Light. It is a unique and one of the oldest lighthouses in the US. Originally built in 1835 out of brick and wood, this 23 foot tower burned with 10 lamps fueled by whale oil inside an octagonal lens. With a new lamp system in 1857, by 1893 it was in rough shape and a replacement was requested. In 1895, the skeletal structure was built out of cast iron. It still stands today, shining it’s light up to 7 nautical miles.
If you are looking for casual seaside dining, check out The Landing, situated on Front Street with beautiful ocean views. The food is always great and prices are reasonable. For a fine dining experience, Palmers Restaurant is a great option with a mix of traditional favorites and new seafood cuisine.
Whether you are a history buff, seafood lover, sailor or just seeking a few days to relax in a quaint coastal town, Marblehead is a must see place for everyone. Pack your camera and boat shoes and bring your appetite!
