Rhode Island, the Ocean State, is undoubtedly a unique place to surf. With more than 400 miles of coastline, there is a plethora of quality waves to choose from. These include peaky beach breaks and slabs on the one hand, and rocky point breaks on the other.
Because this vast coastline is jagged and irregular, Rhode Island also has a unique, broad swell window. Since the swell can come from anywhere, there is always somewhere to surf.
The variation of wave types also means that Rhode Island experiences high variations in water temperatures as well. It is, in fact, one of the few places in the world where temperatures can take a 40 degree turn in just six months, from almost 75 degrees in summer months to 35 degrees in the winter.
This requires another level of commitment from surfers.
The Narragansett Bay, the hub for surfing in New England, divides the state into equally-sized surfing zones, Newport and Narragansett. With glaciation, the bay has carved out the unique shape of Rhode Island. If you want to surf in Narraganset, go to
Warms Winds surf shop.
The surf shop is located in the town of Narragansett along Rhode Island’s southern coast. Warm Winds has been in business since 1973, when it started out as a small, backyard surfboard shop. Today, it is the essential resource for those who are passionate about surfing and the ocean lifestyle.
The shop has everything, from premium equipment and clothing, to surf lessons and classes on sustainability.
