October is National Seafood Month

October may bring in colored leaves, spiced coffees and everything pumpkin. But! For those of us who love seafood, it means more seafood! October is National Seafood Month. For a while it was in June (marketing stunt). However, now it is back in October. October seems like a good choice. For all of us in the colder areas who shy from the cold, it gives us an excuse to extend our seaside fun and seafood season.

National Seafood Month has been around for just over 70 years. Yes, you read right. If you are just learning of it now, you are not alone. Many have not, as it has mostly been a non-eventful holiday for decades. However, now that more people are caring more about our oceans and the food that comes from them, more awareness and education is prevalent. Not only do seafood lovers celebrate the idea of perhaps indulging on more seafood for the month, (It is a lovely excuse to do so.) but we also celebrate and give thought to the overall health of our oceans and the amazing abundance of sustainable food sources they offer. Efforts are made to continue and improve all things connected to the sea and seafood.

You can check out your local area to see if you can become involved. It’s okay if you do not live on the coast. Several fun events are scheduled throughout the nation this month, such as lots of seafood recipe contests. I don’t know about you, but a brisk, sweater-weather October afternoon or evening with seafood on grills everywhere sounds like a good time to me. Perhaps you can host your own event.

Whatever you decide to do, treat yourself to your favorite, most loved seafood this month and celebrate seafood. Enjoy! (By the way, it is also National Dessert Month. So, double enjoy!)
