Cape Cod is an amazing place for those who love the sea and seafood. The beaches are simply amazing and the scenery is spectacular. The place is also known for its oysters and shrimp. But if you happen to be in Chatham, do yourself a favor a try some steamed mussels.

Chatham mussels are plump and delicious, but as is often the case with seafood, they are highly underappreciated. Here we list down a quick recipe for steamed Chatham mussels, which you can try with both live mussels and ones brought from the store.

What You Need:

  • Mussels (4 pounds)
  • Low sodium chicken broth (1 cup)
  • Olive oil (2 tablespoons)
  • Minced shallot (1)
  • Shaved garlic cloves (2)
  • Fresh thyme (4 sprigs)
  • Dry white wine (1/2 cup)
  • 1 lemon juiced
  • Red pepper flakes

  • Unsalted butter (2 tablespoons)

Method:

  1. Start by rinsing the mussels under cold running water. At the same time, use a vegetable brush to scrub them.
  2. Take a stockpot (6 to 8-quart) and heat oil in it.
  3. Sautee shallot, thyme, and garlic in the stockpot. This will create the base flavor
  4. Add the mussels to the sautéed ingredients. Toss well
  5. Add a pinch of red pepper flake, along with wine, chicken broth, and lemon juice.
  6. Cover and steam for 5 minutes on medium-high heat, or till the mussels open.
  7. Uncover the pot and add butter, tomato, and parsley. Toss well. Cover the pot and steam for another minute.

That’s about it! You can have steamed mussels with grilled garlic bread, which will help you with the broth. Once again, if you love seafood, you should definitely try Chatham mussels at least once.
