Seafood That Melts in Your Mouth

Surprising to people not from New England, Portland Maine is hotbed of great restaurants, mostly seafood of course, but includes a wide variety from traditional seafood dishes to fusion cuisine. With such a plethora of places to choose from, let’s narrow down the list to name a few top spots that you should check out.

Boone’s Fish House and Oyster Room – Websiteis actually the fourth “Room” in the small family chain of restaurants, the others being The Corner Room, The Front Room, and The Grill Room. Owned by Chef Harding Lee Smith, who renovated the original, historic Boone’s Restaurant which began operating 1898. Some say it is the birthplace of the Maine Baked Stuffed Lobster, and of course, Chef Smith has kept this historic dish on the menu. Boone’s boasts two outdoor decks, an oyster bar and stunning views of Casco Bay.

Also a seasonal place for delicious Maine seafood, this lobster shack is where to go for the sweetest, melt-in-your-mouth fried clams. The chef owner says the homemade chowders are favorites for the natives and a definite must have while waiting for your clams. They open at the end of March, so mark you calendar and plan a trek over there.

The Lobster Shack– Website at Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth is not your average lobster hut. Featured in Bon Apetit and Gourmet Magazine, this little hidden gem is nestled on the rocks just below the lighthouse and fog horn. Get your order in and choose a red picnic table to watch the lobstermen haul up their catch while listening to the crashing surf just feet below you. For excellent seafood, and ambiance that is all Maine is meant to be, head to the Lobster Shack this March 28th.
