Elba Island is one of Italy’s most popular tourist sites and travelers on the island usually experience the town of Portoferraio first on their itinerary. While it gets foot traffic throughout the year, the town is more or less the same since Argonautic times. In fact, the town was the capital of the island when Napoleon captured the region.
History aside, Portoferraio features a treasure trove of natural beauty which is unparalleled in Europe. The journey to the “Iron Port” is short, whether you travel by car or ferry. Much of the attraction of the island has to do with the history and mythology that have hyped up the location so much that people consider traveling to Portoferraio no less than a voyage. The tourists can’t wait to leave the boat as soon as the ferry is anchored on the shore.
In a bygone area, the town was home to iron mills that made this town prosperous. Part of its attraction was in it port trade: selling iron ore to the mainland. The Bonaparte later took up building the town, giving it modern infrastructure, economy, and society.
History buffs can still visit the old villas called Villa di Mulini and St. Martin’s, where Napolean lived during his exile.
Showing up from the ocean, Portoferraio appears to be a narrows, shielded from thieves by it strongholds which give a close safe haven from the ocean.
The town was initially brought into the world as a stronghold and is still very much protected and along with the notable dividers, holds one of the most famous vacation destinations of Portoferraio.
Tourists also enjoy visiting the dock where people worked during the Medici time and in the XVth century. It safeguarded the town against looting. Its an attraction you can’t pass by without seeing it while arriving from the ship-
