Fish Kayaking
Tips on Finding a Good Fishing Kayak
One of the hottest new trends in outdoor sports is kayak fishing. It is a safe, easy, and fun way to catch fish. In the last couple of years, fishing kayaks have become safer and more comfortable and equipped with all sorts of features like fish finders, rod holders, and livewells. So how do you choose the best one for your needs?
First off, you need to determine your needs. For instance, do you need a kayak for freshwater ponds or saltwater harbors? This should be your first consideration. There is no one-size-fits-all model.
Secondly, when you are at a marina or a paddlesport shop, be sure to take a demo. Not every fishing kayak is meant for all types of activities, so you always need to check if a particular model works for you or not.
Most importantly, you need to know a thing or two about essential features of fishing kayaks. For instance, length is an important feature. For the most part, the longer the kayak, the faster it will be, although you will find it hard to maneuver in tight spots. The same goes for width. Usually, wider kayaks are more stable, but width is not the only thing that affects stability.
You also have to think about weight, i.e. what is the cartop capacity. A heavier kayak may allow you to carry more equipment, but it will be harder to move down to the launch site. This depends on how much storage you require as well.
Finally, fishing kayaks nowadays come with adjustable seats that resemble lawn chairs. These are good for the back. Cheaper kayaks may have molded-in seats. This is a feature you should consider if you want to spend most of your fishing time sitting. If ou like to stand while fishing, go for a wider kayak.
