Is Sushi Healthy?
Most Nutritionists Say Yes
A few months ago, the New York Times reported a survey where the general public and nutritionists were asked whether Sushi was healthy. 75% of the nutritionists replied “YES” while 49% of the general public responded “NO”.
The right answer should really be “It depends”. Because the question “Is sushi is good for you?” is like the question “Are people good for you?”! The answer actually depends on what is on the inside, and what the circumstances are.
Think about it. For instance, we all agree that celery is healthy. But if we deep fry it in animal fat and then add a lot of sugar and salt, will that celery dish still be healthy? Not really! You can take the healthiest food item and turn it into the unhealthiest meal.
Sushi is potentially a very healthy meal since it contains seafood that provides high-quality protein. It is a fast and simple source of protein. If you want a high-protein meal or snack, go for salmon, rainbow or tuna rolls. You’ll be getting 20+ grams of protein in each roll.
The Omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish are great for your cardiovascular health. Moreover, they’re anti-inflammatory compounds, playing an important role in brain function.
You just have to be careful how you consume sushi. For instance, you can have a sushi dinner that has a lot of carbs and doesn’t have enough vegetables. There are a lot of types of sushi and chefs keep on experimenting to create new sushi dishes.
The bottom line is that sushi can be very healthy or very unhealthy, depending on which ingredients are used and how it is prepared and even on how much you eat! So there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy sushi guilt-free!
