Hands-Free Fishing or Paddling
Enjoy Greater Speed and Efficiency
Kayak fishing continues to enjoy popularity in 2017, for more or less the same reasons as boat fishing. However, modern kayaks have innovative designs, and it can be tough choosing the ideal one from the wide selection of models available.
When we talk of innovative design, one relatively new trend is kayaks with foot propulsion. This was made popular by the company Hobie Kayaks in 1997, when they launched a pedal-powered device known as the Mirage Drive. Small watercraft did come with foot propulsion before the Mirage, but this was the game changer.
This year, Hobie is out with Outback Kayak 2017 that features the Mirage Drive 180. For $2500, you are getting a 12ft Kayak weighing 99lb. There is one gear bucket, 4 molded-in rod holders, and molded-in storage well surrounding the cockpit. The Mirage Drive 180 has forward/reverse capability.
The main benefit of paddling a kayak is of course hands-free control. When you are rowing, you have to juggle between your paddle and your fishing gear, which makes control difficult in bad weather. With a peddle in place, you maintain control with your legs while adjusting the rudder from time to time.
And while most anglers are not looking for speed when fishing, pedal-powered kayaks are definitely faster and more efficient than paddled kayaks. You can cover greater area faster with a pedaled kayak.
However, do remember that with a pedal drive, you have to forego cargo space on the center deck. Plus, peddled kayaks require more maintenance.
The most important consideration, however, is the cost, as peddled kayaks are more expensive than traditional ones. The Mirage is also pricier than some of its counterparts, so ultimately it is up to decide whether you want to spend so much or not.
