Whale Watch from Boston

Enjoy a Show Only Nature Can Provide

Boston, with close proximity to the Boston Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean, offers you the best whale watching tours. There are several boats around the city that get you close enough to dolphins, minke whales, fin whales, and of course, humpback whales.

The ideal time for watching whales in Boston is between mid-April to mid-October. This is the time when humpback whales come back for feeding in the North Atlantic waters. They are a delight to watch, with their breaching and tail slapping providing fantastic entertainment!

But don’t forget your binoculars, because the boats cannot come closer than 100 yards of the whales. Since you will be watching from a distance, a pair of binoculars will give you a better view of these splendid whales.

Depending on your itinerary, you shouldn’t take a sunset boat ride. The best chance of watching whales is on a morning tour. Plus, you get better photos in the day time. The good thing is that most touring companies will offer you a refund or free tickets to go again if there are no whale sightings during your trip.

The best views come from the front of the boat, so don’t feel shy in pacing to the front after boarding. But don’t push anyone along the way! Also remember that these are not short trips, so be prepared for a long day. This includes bringing snacks along, and also taking necessary precautions if you have sea sickness.

Finally, sunscreen is a must if you will be going in summer. Get something upwards of SPF 15 for maximum protection. It is also a good idea to bring in extra layers, because it can get chilly on the water, even during summers.

Most importantly, don’t forget to listen to the song of male humpback whales. Your boat company may lower a hydrophone in the water so you get clearer sound.
