Shrimping

Where, When, and How

If you are a seafood lover, you probably love eating shrimp, and if you are a bit more adventurous, you might even try your hand at shrimping which is when people go out on the water and catch their own shrimp. In order to begin shrimping, you first need access to shrimp so you will need to be near the coast or a body of water known to have lots of shrimp

Some of the best places to shrimp whether you live near a city or are simply looking to go shrimping during your vacation is near a coast, such as South Carolina, Alabama or Florida.

Shrimping, is actually pretty simple even though it seems like a lot to learn for someone new to shrimping. To get started, you need several things.

  • First, you need an offshore fishing boat, a GPS finder or depth and a net.
  • You are going to want a boat with ample deck space in order to cast a net that is generally 6-8 feet in diameter.
  • Although it seems very simple you might need a bit of practice effectively throwing a cast net in order to catch a lot of shrimp.
  • You also need a bait binder, buckets and a cooler to use when you catch the shrimp. Many people drill holes in the buckets to easily drain.
  • It is also important to have enough cooler space to store your shrimp in case you have a fruitful day.

Once you have successfully caught your shrimp, you now need a great recipe. Depending on where you are, you might adopt one of the areas more popular recipes. For instance, if you are in Louisiana you might opt to use a Cajun inspired recipe such as creole recipe with sausage. Or a creamy garlic, butter recipe if you are toward the northeastern coasts. Either way, finding a great recipe and properly preparing your shrimp will ensure that you enjoy and get the most of your catch.
