Fripp and Huntington
Golf, Resort Chic to Low Country Beach Life
South Carolina has a lot of coastline – great resort areas and golf vacation spots alike. Two such places are Fripp and Huntington Islands. Actually, Fripp is the Resort location – with wonderful vacation options and Huntington is a private state park – neighboring islands with differing appeal.
Fripp Island is beautiful. It is the southernmost of the south Carolina islands and is very much an island resort destination. It is affordable luxury in my opinion. Getting there is easy and there are a variety of options for your stay. Do the full-on resort thing or rent a house or condo….whatever the case, you will love the sites and sounds of this gorgeous Island. Whether you like to sip poolside or walk the beaches – Saltwater or Freshwater fishing, bike rentals or hiking or both. Sunrise to Sunset- this is a place you can really unwind.
Next to Fripp is Huntington Island– which is a State Park – complete with lighthouse, beaches and more. No resorts here – this is basically a big nature preserve! You can walk the beaches and still find great shells and even sharks’ teeth! Check out the Nature Center for island information, and to see some of the current and past residents. Turtles, Deer, Raccoons, Snakes, and there are countless herons and egrets – I love these long-legged birds hanging out in the marshes – they are just beautiful.
Much like Florida – there is a big draw to watching the turtle hatchlings come out of their nests and scoot themselves out to the ocean. They hatch any time between May and October and because of them – you can’t use flashlights on the beach after dark. In case you don’t know – the way the turtles know to go out to see is that they are drawn to the water by the moonlight. They are not born geniuses though – so if you have an outdoor light on nearby, they will head to that point instead of out to sea.
So whether you are looking for resort chic or just natural low country beach life – these islands offer it all…fishing, beaches, boating and yes – dining.
