Stop Polluting the Water!

An Eco-Friendly Mindset

Needed to Avert this Crisis5

Do you know that less than 5% of the world’s water resources are considered freshwater? We all recognize the menace of water pollution, but hardly anything is being done to thwart it. Worse still, most people are simply unaware of what water pollution actually is. This is a brief attempt to explain what causes water pollution, and how pollution festers the oceans.

Simply explained, water pollution refers to the release of toxic chemicals, contaminants, and harmful compounds in the ocean. When these pollutants are not filtered or disposed properly, they infect the water and any living organisms that come in contact with it. In short, the smallest negligence with regards to pollution affects plants, trees, and all natural resources of planet earth.

Industrial wastage is the biggest contributor to water pollution. With increasing world population, more and more people are now living close to the ocean, and this has also increased water pollution levels. Moreover, rainfall can cause polluted landscapes to scatter hazardous material into the surrounding water.

Pollution of any kind essentially poisons the water. The rainfall in regions with high levels of water pollution also becomes toxic for human beings. Inside the water, animals and plants develop all forms of diseases and deformities, and sea life dies a slow, murderous death. Also, many species of fish get contaminated and eating them becomes dangerous, even cancerous.

The trend has to reverse if humanity is to survive and remain healthy. All of us need to develop an eco-friendly consciousness. Individuals have to make an effort to reduce their carbon footprint by taking steps which can be as small as installing energy savers in their homes, replacing air fresheners with scented candles, and purchasing local food that is produced with little or no chemicals etc. In short, we have to clean up after ourselves if we want pure water in the future.
