Does Your Pet Love Water?
Learn About the Top Swimming Dog Breeds
While all of us love the sight of a dog paddling in water, it is not always a good idea to toss your dog in the pool! You should know that there are certain breeds that really know swimming, and thus make great water retrievers.
A prime example is Newfoundland, named after the coast this breed hails from. Despite its size, the Newfoundland is adept at rescuing errant swimmers and towing lines from shop to land in rough seas.
Another water-friendly dog is the Labrador Retriever, which is undoubtedly the most popular breed in America. Another favorite is the Golden Retriever, who is known for its ability to retrieve waterfowl.
But let’s not forget out little friend, the Standard Poodle. The name comes from pudeln, which is German for splashing. So the name itself tells you about the splashy nature of the Standard Poodle, which is well and good as long as it’s not splashing you in the eyes!
Moving on towards a tougher breed, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever can actually dive into and swim in ice cold water! A ‘Cheesie’ comes with a coat that you can call water-proof, and it also a dense undercoat helping the retriever withstand the roughest of weathers.
As far as coats are concerned, let’s not forget the Irish Water Spaniel. It’s one of the oldest spaniel breeds in the world, and its beautiful coat and tight curls help withstand harsh outdoor conditions.
So these are top water rescue dogs. There are other swimming breeds as well, but remember that all swimming dogs need time to learn and move around in the water. Take special precautions before taking your dog to unfamiliar bodies of water, especially rivers and seas.
