Best Seafood South of Boston

One fact I will always stand by, when it comes to great seafood, you don’t have to go to a fine dining restaurant with linen table clothes and napkins to have an exceptional meal. Of course, there are those times of celebration that perhaps we wish to pay for not only the food, but the splendor of such restaurants. However, to venture out on a summer evening in search of great seafood after a hot day at the beach, head down to Hull, Massachusetts to Jake’s Seafood Restaurant and Fish Market for the ultimate seafood in the rough experience.

Jake’s is situated in a perfect spot on the coast of Hull, where the panoramic views display the splendor of New England’s coastline, complete with vibrant sunsets. Opening for business in 1949, for 35 years it remained a family operation. John Jacobson and his brothers opened Jake’s, wanting to sell the lobster and and clams the caught straight out of Buzzard’s Bay. The brother’s sister was the first cook of the restaurant, and remained so for many years, nieces and nephews working through their youth to help pay for college tuition.

In 1984, the O’Brien family bought Jake’s and have maintained it ever since. The family, being from Hull, knew exactly how to keep the famous reputation cultivated over the decades. They added to the menu, offering not only the freshest seafood delights, but unique pasta dishes and sandwiches, including an awesome lobster salad roll.

Did I mention the amazing lobster bisque? A New England favorite next to clam chowder, the bisque at Jake’s is raved about almost as much as the stunning sunset views. Also, the lump crab cakes are fantastic, loaded with crab meat and very little filler, a sure palate pleaser.

The other fantastic part of Jake’s is the fish market. Don’t feel like eating out? No problem! Stop at Jake’s on your way home from the beach and pick up fresh, live and kicking lobsters or perhaps a few catch of the day fillets. There is something there for everyone.

Winning awards like Best of the Best from South Shore Living and Best Fried Clams by NECN, Jake’s has a wide variety of seafood from fried clams to baked haddock, salmon, halibut and other delectable dishes. Worthy of a road trip, especially if you are staying in or around Boston. While there are great restaurants in the city, you will also pay city prices, unlike at Jake’s. The view combined with the excellent food and great service are worth the scenic drive out to Hull.
