Woodman’s of

Essex, Massachusetts

100+ Years of Delicious Seafood

The salty sweet smell of the ocean, coupled with scents of seafood and visions of red hot boiled lobsters in the rough… All of these delectable senses and more is what you will encounter at Woodman’s of Essex. Located in the heart of Essex, Massachusetts on Main Street, this “Yankee tradition” has been around for over 100 years and has built a reputation of the best seafood in New England, perhaps the entire country. Surrounded by salt water marshes and the Essex River, the restaurant was founded by Lawrence “Chubby” Woodman, the legendary man who invented the Ipswich fried clam. You haven’t lived until you have had one of these tasty little treats.

This is the awesome entrance to Woodman’s of Essex, complete with massive outdoor lobster pots, and whether 50 or 90 degrees outside, you can always find a line waiting to place orders for the unbelievably fresh and mouthwatering food.

Parking is abundant at Woodman’s, and visiting in season, you will most definitely encounter long lines. Do not be fooled! They move quickly and before you know it, the lobster you pick out will head right into the outdoor lobster pots. The process is quite brilliant, really, from a restaurant operating perspective; choose your lobster and place your order just inside the front door. I highly recommend the fried clams, the award winning clam chowder, and the tender sweet steamers.

Obviously, the lobster is a necessary must-have. The corn on the cob is also amazing, and goes great with all the seafood. After you have ordered, you will get a number, and are free to belly up to the bar to place your order for beer, wine, lemonade or any other refreshing beverage you may want to accompany your experience. Choose a table and have a seat!

Waiting isn’t long, especially with so much to take in between the memorabilia of 100 years of service in the same location, the view of the salt water marsh, or take in some great people watching. The crowds come from all over the world for the ultimate New England experience that Woodman’s offers.

Once your number is called, you can pick up your food and grab any accoutrements you may need like tartar sauce, ketchup, lemon and don’t forget lots of napkins! The awards which Woodman’s has won over the years are too extensive a list to name here, not to mention how many documentaries and movies they have had the privilege in which to be involved. As a native New Englander, when summer approaches, I cannot help but get excited for the annual trip to Woodman’s. It truly is a memorable
