Maine has garnered a lot of popularity over the fact that it harvests some of the best and most delicious lobster. Most people cannot tell the difference between a Maine and a Canadian lobster, but the true lobster connoisseurs would be able to tell you just by looking at the lobster.

Let’s look at why the Maine lobster is the best there is. Maine lobsters are harvested in the cold American waters, as compared to the warm waters in which other lobsters are harvested, making them sweeter and firmer. Their meat is also whiter than warm water lobsters.

Both cold and warm water lobsters have five sets of legs, but cold water lobsters have two large claws and four small claws, which help distinguish between the two. Warm water lobsters do not have claws, but look similar to the others. Although both are lobsters, they originate from different species of crustaceans. You would find warm water lobsters in the areas where they are caught, but cold water lobsters are spread far and wide.

About half of North America’s lobster supply comes from Maine, making it one of the
most sought-after lobsters. If you live far off from Maine, you will find the hard shell lobsters, which are shipped as live lobsters and then cooked. Towns and cities closer to Maine commonly have the shedder or soft shell lobsters, which have lesser meat and are sweeter. Since the soft shell lobsters cannot travel for long distances, they are sent to nearby areas.
