Crawfish, Crawdads or Mudbugs
An April Visit to New Orleans and Enjoying Buckets of Crawfish
I had the pleasure of visiting New Orleans in the month of April. The temperature was perfect. The weather for the whole trip was sunny bright skies with warm temperatures and no wind. If you imagine that temperature and climate does not exist, this is what New Orleans feels like in April. You simply are so comfortable that you cannot feel the air. Therefore, imagine being ultra-comfortable and being able to order buckets of crayfish all the time. Yes, they come in wooden buckets. Having buckets of crawdads available everywhere is my favorite part of New Orleans. They are so good. It is fantastic!
You can get bucket after bucket of crawfish restaurant after restaurant. The dining atmosphere is typically casual, something you might see and experience in restaurants that have a lot of small steamed crabs or clam bakes. What is better yet is that most restaurants have beautiful stone gardens outside with tables. There are shells everywhere, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Even though the atmosphere is relaxed, most everyone is in either shorts or jeans and the price is right, the stone gardens and surrounding architecture makes it all seem like you are dining at an upscale, quaint, old world style restaurant. I like fresh seafood so much that I felt an instant bond to anyone else ordering a bucket of crayfish. “Oh you like mudbugs! I must have a ton in common with and like you!”
There are many, many reasons to enjoy New Orleans. I just simply love the crawfish part, and it is nearly impossible for me to get crawdads where I live.
Now, you may have noticed that I called these little critters by a different name throughout. I grew up calling them crayfish. In New Orleans, natives tend to say crawfish. The other two terms are crawdads and mudbugs. All terms point to the same animal. What do you call them? You can answer in the comment section below, and please do.
