Visit Monterey, California
Located on the central coast of California, Monterey offers a wide variety of museums, art galleries, and outdoor and indoor activities. Located on the Monterey Bay, the area was named by Spanish merchant and explorer, Sebastian Vizcaino in 1602. In 1770, Father Junipero Serra established a Spanish military base and fort near the Monterey harbor. The first capital of California, Monterey still features some of the best examples of the influence of Spanish and Mexican cultures on California’s early development.
You may wish to begin your tour with the Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums on the west coast. Then you can walk to Cannery Row, named in honor of John Steinbeck’s novel about the fishing/canning industry. The Row, once a thriving industrial area, is now lined with hotels, restaurants and shops along the waterfront. From the Row, you can rent a surrey or a Segway and meander down to Fisherman’s Wharf, where you can interact with sea lions and visit shops. On the coast, you can watch seals, sea lions, sea otters, and migrating whales in the fall or spring. Other marine activities popular in Monterey are scuba diving, surfing, and kayaking.
If you’re a history buff, you may enjoy a tour of the Larkin Housein Monterey, a great example of early California architecture now known as the Monterey style. The two-story, adobe house is filled with antiques and memorabilia, and is surrounded by plush gardens. Close to Fisherman’s Wharf, the Custom Home, which is the oldest government building in California, houses an interesting collection of ancient pirate booty. The Monterey State Historic Park also contains historic buildings that are open for inspection. The nearby Pacific House Museum and the Maritime Museum of History explores Native Americans, and of seafaring and commercial fishing in and around Monterey. The Old Whaling Station is another one-of-a-kind exploration into history.
Beautiful Monterey, California is a must-see, living example of California’s rich history, cultural development, and seaside sights, sounds, and activities.
