Know Where Your Seafood Comes From
I am from Connecticut , which is right on Long Island Sound. There are good seafood restaurants here, but none have ever blown my mind. We have fresh seafood here and great chefs. So, I really don’t know whats up. Well, that is over now.
I have seen Jasper White on The Food Network and PBS a large number of times over the years. I was always extremely impressed by his knowledge of different types and the preparation of seafood. When the Mohegan Sun Casino Casino opened up in Connecticut, where I am from, I knew I had to get there and see what all the fuss was about.
To begin with, it is a massive restaurant focused on seafood. Whether it be the chalkboard seafood specials, lobster tanks or open kitchen, everything points to seafood. My wife and I are both seafood lovers so, we were ready for something great.
We always begin our meal with a Tower of Power. With this you receive 8 Raw Oysters, 8 Raw Little Neck Clams, 4 Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail and 4 Crab Legs. All on a bed of crushed ice The times that we went, we were able to substitute the crab legs for a 1 pound lobster. That entire group of items sounds mundane. But you could not be more wrong. You get to select where the clams and oysters come from. The staff is very knowledgeable about them, like a waiter should be about wine. They will tell you whether a certain area produces salty or chewy taste or texture of the shellfish Everything is “just caught or dug up” fresh. You can taste the freshness and this seafood has caused us to not go to other seafood restaurants. I have been to many in the past and, nope, not going back to any of them (at least in Connecticut)– EVER!
Another very important note. The Tower of Power comes with a price tag of $54. That is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but, you get what you pay for. In this case, you over receive. My wife and I carefully budget our money and plan when we can go to the Summer Shack. Every time is always better than the last.
I will post again about the other menu items that I have eaten. Once you taste incredibly fresh seafood, you will never go back. Right now I just can’t stop thinking about the Tower of Power. I need to get there again really soon.
